sounds like an error someone else reported by email. what's your gtk version? i think you need at least 2.4, maybe even 2.6.

hm... that 2.6.4 stuff should be good enough. but maybe there's a bug in that version. try upgrading.
the chap who reported exactly the same symtoms told me the problem went away after he updated gtk2.

but did this also update your gtk2 stuff? did they have something newer in their reps?
i just checked, i have gtk+ 2.6.8. other than this, i have no idea what the problem might be. i googled a bit, too, but didn't find anything that helped
i also looked into the ubuntu package list. the relevant packages seem to be:
Code: Select all
Package libgtk2.0-0
breezy (libs): The GTK+ graphical user interface library
2.8.6-0ubuntu2: amd64 i386 powerpc
Package libgtk2.0-common
breezy (misc): Common files for the GTK+ graphical user interface library
2.8.6-0ubuntu2: all
Package libgtk2.0-dev
breezy (libdevel): Development files for the GTK+ library
2.8.6-0ubuntu2: amd64 i386 powerpc
2.8.x should be backward compatible to 2.6.x, but maybe it'd be safest if you tried to install 2.6.8.

erm ohh dear me failing to grasp this. .. ok i tested my dpkg again and not much has changed im still ruinning 2.6.4
I tried apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev but its said the latest is already installed.. so i guess????
ubuntu hasnt gotten to 2.6.8.. the 2.8.6 you mention is the breezy strain which is the advanced/testing ubuntu from mem. Im running hoary.
sooooo.. Im not sure how to apt-get a higher version
im just remote installing bygfoot on the work machine.. it should be ok there I just checked and its runing 2.6.8
BTW I once tried to install breezy on the laptop from scratch and it wouldnt take so Im a little loath to try that avenue.

hm... today breezy got released, so i guess it'd be safe to switch reps and upgrade your system to breezy? or maybe not everything, just apt-get install libgtk2-XXX, which should upgrade to the breezy version?

hmm this is becoming a tangled web of a headache..
The ubuntu forum pretty much laughed at me when I tried to install breezy on the dumb laptop last time. so i aint going there again.
I also am a little concerned about updating so I guess im stuck with trying to just install gtk Ill try this when i get back to work and in the swing of things.
What i dont understand is what suddenly changed to cause all this.

that shouldn't be very hard, i think. as far as i know you only have to add an up-to-date repository to your sources (e.g. the breezy repository) and do an 'apt-get install libgtk2' (or whatever the correct package is). this should install the newest version that's found in the reps.
What i dont understand is what suddenly changed to cause all this.
i don't have a clue myself, unfortunately

vector didn't complain about it for quite some time, maybe he's solved it.
and maybe he shares his insights with us next time he happens to browse the forums

greenman, maybe for you it's easier to update gtk. try updating to 2.6.8 or 2.6.9, maybe that helps.
