a nice idea. i like it. but i don't know anything about irc, you'd have to tell me how it works and what client i should use.

You can use a lot of clients.
I recommend in graphical: xchat.
in console: irssi.
Use it with these commands:
/server irc.freenode.net
/join #bygfoot
easy.

i've been in that room a lot of times, but i didn't ever see anyone. i'm not sure i'm going to keep that irc window of gaim open in the future.
