I use only GNOME. I haven't KDE and QT installed, hehehe.

My Linux is powered by GTK and GNOME.

I used gnome since "forever", but recently switched to XFCE4. My fallback WM is Windowmaker

I have been using WindowMaker for a few years and it is an excellent one (small, light, fast, reliable), but now I am using the CVS version of E17 which is already very stable and extremely pretty.

XFCE4 is based on GTK2, so it has that familiar feel. By default it loads up with a window manager (no desktop icons, and other stuff like that), and two panels. The top panel is for minimizing windows, systray, etc., while the bottom panel is for general shortcut icons, clock, pager, and there is a lot of other useful plugins.

I switched from gnome mainly because it was too hard to update and stuff. Something would get broken each time I upgrade (I use Arch Linux - a great distro, so I keep updating my system daily), and I just got tired.

XFCE4 is lightweight (my machine is good enough for most modern DEs, but it's still nice not to use more than you need), "clean", stable, etc. It's also based on GTK, so everything looks nice (I think I only use one non-GTK application).

Give it a shot, and make sure you also get xfce-goodies and xfce terminal. It's easy to set up, but not bloated.

Fluxbox is really cool. I use it too. I should admit, that i am addicted to those sweet little DockApps and can´t do without them. Of course Windowmaker supports them too. Nevertheless Fluxbox just matches my personal taste and my needs much more than any other WM i ever tried.

Actualy, GNOME and KDE aren't windowmanagers. They are Desktop Environments.

In can use different windowmanagers. We use metacity.
